Golf Is Harder on Your Body Than You Think
With over 60 million golfers worldwide, golf-related injuries are far more common than most people realize.[1] Research shows that injury rates among amateur golfers range from about 15 to 40 per 100 players annually — and among professionals, that number climbs even higher due to the sheer volume of swings taken in practice and competition.[2]
The golf swing is an asymmetric, high-speed, full-body movement that generates enormous rotational forces — and most injuries reflect that demand. The most commonly injured areas include:[3]
- Lower back (the single most common site, affecting 28–35% of golfers)[4]
- Elbow — particularly medial epicondylitis, known as “golfer’s elbow”[5]
- Wrist and hand — especially the lead wrist, which absorbs significant impact at ball contact[4]
- Shoulder — most often the lead shoulder, through rotator cuff overuse and AC joint stress[5]
- Hip and knee — less commonly, but increasingly recognized as contributors to back and swing problems
Most of these injuries fall into one of two categories: overuse injuries from repetitive loading over time, or acute injuries from a single forceful event — like catching a tree root or swinging through thick rough.[1]
Why Rest Alone Isn’t Enough
When you’re in pain, stopping activity feels like the obvious first step — and in the very early stages of an acute injury, protecting the area and reducing load is absolutely appropriate.[6] But prolonged, passive rest is a different story.
Here’s what happens when you simply stop moving and wait:
- Muscles begin to weaken within as little as 24 hours of immobilization[7]
- Connective tissue stiffens as collagen forms haphazardly rather than along lines of functional stress[7]
- Circulation decreases, slowing the delivery of nutrients and the removal of inflammatory byproducts[7]
- Proprioception deteriorates, increasing the risk of re-injury when you return to play[7]
- The root cause goes unaddressed — whether that’s poor swing mechanics, a muscle imbalance, or a movement restriction that put undue stress on the injured tissue in the first place[8]

The Most Common Golf Injuries — And How We Treat Them
Lower Back Pain
Low back pain is the most frequent complaint in golfers at all levels, driven by the rotational forces and repeated spinal loading of the swing.[9] When hip mobility or thoracic rotation is restricted, the lumbar spine compensates — absorbing forces it isn’t designed to handle.[4]
Physical therapy for golf-related lower back pain focuses on restoring hip and thoracic mobility, building lumbar stability, and correcting the movement faults that are transferring load to the spine. Research confirms that exercise-based rehabilitation is superior to rest alone for low back pain outcomes.[10]
Golfer’s Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis)
Overuse of the forearm muscles and tendons that attach to the inside of the elbow is a hallmark golf injury.[11] Left untreated — or treated with rest alone — it frequently becomes chronic and progressively harder to manage.
